Howard is the Choreographer/Director of this Contemporary Dance Theater work with live music.
“Kata” is an attempt to integrate movements and concepts of the so-called martial arts into dance and place them in a dramatic context. Kata are forms of movement used by all martial arts designed to sharpen specific strengths and sensitivity of the fighter. In Howard Katz's new solo, situations are transformed into concentrated poetic forms, tactics are created for conflict situations, koans are invented for questions, songs as memories, or gestural phrases as stories. The interrelation between body memory and memory is to be explored in this way. The inscriptions that life leaves on our bodies, for example in the form of a scar, tell their own story, which in turn imprints itself on the structure of our memory and vice versa.
Howard Katz is accompanied in his project by the musician Matthias Herrmann, who combines cello music, electronic sounds and beats into a live mix. Each musical interlude relates to the timing and tension of a specific kata. Depending on the character of a kata, they are divided into soundscapes and composed pieces. “Kata” ist der Versuch, Bewegungen und Konzepte der sogenannten Kampfsportarten in den Tanz zu integrieren und sie in einen dramatischen Kontext zu stellen. Kata sind Bewegungsformen, die von allen martial arts angewandt werden und die spezifische Stärken und die Sensibilität des Kämpfers schärfen sollen. In Howard Katz' neuem Solo werden Situationen in konzentrierte poetische Formen transformiert, Taktiken für Konfliktsituationen geschaffen, Koans für Fragestellungen, Songs als Erinnerung oder gestische Phrasen als Story erfunden. Erforscht werden soll so die Wechselbeziehung zwischen Körpergedächtnis und Erinnerung. Die Einschreibungen, die das Leben auf unserem Körper hinterlässt, z.B. in Form einer Narbe, erzählen eine eigene Geschichte, die sich wiederum in die Stuktur unserer Erinnerung prägt und vice versa.
Begleitet wird Howard Katz bei seinem Projekt von dem Musiker Matthias Herrmann, der Cellomusik, elektronische Klänge und Beats zu einem Livemix vereint. Jedes musikalische Zwischenspiel bezieht sich auf Zeitmaß und Spannung eines spezifischen Katas. Je nach Charakter eines Katas sind sie in Soundscapes und komponierte Stücke unterteilt.
